What if...

We'd definitely be seeing a lot more of the one-off characters returning at least as background cameos. And we'd not hear such gems as "His firebox was on fire".

What if Britt Allcroft had given Bowler/Class 40 the name "Andy" (the same name he would later receive in the fanon Mad Bomber series) in the episode Bowled Out rather than just being referred to as The Diesel?

First, he'd have a single name like everyone else, rather than being the "Engine of Many Names".

Second, he'd be the only character besides Thomas (and the Fat Controller) to retain their original name in Mad Bomber.

What if Chris Awdry never had the measles, but the books were still written?

The series wouldn't have made it past Tramway Engines, because Chris Awdry wouldn't have felt a need to continue his father's legacy. Ultimately, someone else could very well have ghostwritten some of those stories, but I doubt some of them could have reached the Awdrys' standards of technical accuracy.

One thing I am curious about:

What if Thomas himself didn't get such individually popular, but rather the character roster as a whole sort of had that "internationally famous" status?

Then the show would obviously be called the Railway Series, and the episodes would be more centered around everyone, and Thomas wouldn't necessarily be in specials.

What if Diesel 10 is actually the anti-hero of the series?

After all, Diesel is more of an antagonist.
