Misconceptions you had about Thomas

Post by raptorboy02 on Thu Apr 27, 2017 5:05 pm

Here's a fun little idea I had, basically share the misconceptions you had about the show, books, or toys growing up!
I'll start.
1. I thought that Edward was a girl.
2. I thought Frank was standard gauge, since all I had seen of him was the WR toy.

Well, when I was little, Super Rescue was a favorite story of mine (less today but still great), and I really, really wanted to see the episode version of it. Unfortunately, I could never find one. This is likely due to the fact that A) the stories did in fact come first, and B) not every story had an episode version.

Poor me. Razz

So, this is basically our version of the "Alternate Perceptions" thread. I'm surprised we never had one when the Forums were founded. I suggest the title be shortened to simply "Thomas Misperceptions/misconceptions".

Anyway, here are some of the only ones I can truly remember. When I first discovered the franchise, I was still learning English, so I had difficulties pronouncing and spelling names and even basic words that I found on Thomas products and on other material. For example, I interpreted the ampersand ("&") in the show's title as "A" ("Thomas A Friends"), and read "Percy" with a hard "C" ("perky") instead of "persee" (dad corrected me, though). I also somehow assumed said engine was female (...)

I thought Mavis was a male.

I thought James was a female.

I too thought Frank was standard gauge.

I thought the treacle that covered Percy was Vegemite.

Uh.. That is an opinion, not a misconception/perception. Sounds better suited for the "Unpopular Opinions" thread.

Assuming you somehow didn't know about male and female names, I could understand that, especially since (nearly) all the other engines are male. At least Daisy had undeniably feminine facial features.

I didn't realize that the narrow gauge tracks were actually, y'know, narrower than the standard gauge tracks. I just thought the engines were really small.

I thought Skarloey actually was a young engine. I misunderstood the line "I feel all excited, just like a young engine!"

Before I understood how seasons worked, I thought Season 1 was all of Seasons 1-4, Season 2 was Season 5-6, and Season 3 was everything onward. I kinda just went based off of the US narrator.

As a kid with my TWR, I thought Ada Jane and Mabel were standard gauge coaches.

Looking back... to be honest that was the only real misconception I had. Thomas was fairly straightforward so for me, there wasn't much to "misinterpret" if you will

I mentioned this on a different thread, but due to o episode arrangements on my old VHS tapes, I thought Diesel was the diesel engine who came to do Thomas' work after Thomas Comes to Breakfast.

When I started watching the show, I seriously thought Sodor was a real place that you could visit (this was mostly due to the fact that the Isle of Man, the island Northwest of Sodor, was a real island). A single line from 'Island Song' quickly changed that perception ("to a land of make-believe").

As a kid who collected Ertls, I was expecting Culdee, Godred, Lord Harry, D199, Wilbert & Sixteen (and possibly more) would end up in the TV series.

I didn't know there was a such thing as Standard and Narrow Gauge until I was older.

I thought Rusty was Standard gauge for a while; I will admit that.

I got my Rusty before the other narrow gauge engines, and before I saw a single season 4 episode, so that threw me off. I eventually got that straightened out.

For the longest time, I thought of James, Stepney, Skarloey, and Rheneas all as girls. Probably has to do with he colours but I never thought of them as being guys

Actually, Stepney is understandable since his name can (and has) been misinterpreted as "Stephanie". Plus, only someone familiar with (or from) London would really understand it.

The TV series is based on the books; that's not a misconception

I don't think he meant the show was not based on The Railway Series; I suppose he was referring to those tie-in books based on specific episodes, and that he thought the show was based on those.

This is one of those book adaptations:

Either that, or he thought every episode was originally written by the Awdrys (including seasons 5 and after).

Oops! I hadn't realized I made a mistake.

Well, I actually thought the railway series books (the originals before the TV show) was based on the TV show. You are correct in what I was trying to say.

Reminds me of the time when I read out Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (book) long after we saw the film series, and Mom thought the book postdated the film because of how similar it was.
