Could a Steam Engine Villain Work?
Hey it's Tug and I wanted to talk today about villains in the show. Since all we have had as villains are diesels and humans I was wondering if a steam engine villain could actually work. So far the only thing close to a steam engine villain we have had was Spencer in HOTR but he wasn't really being evil, he was just trying to find out what was going on. The only way I could see a steam engine villain would be he would try to replace a main character, for selfish reasons, like Stanley in the Great Discovery but more evil. Leave a comment on how you think a steam engine villain could be added to the show.

Maybe a steam engine who wants diesel engines scrapped?

Re: Could a Steam Engine Villain Work?
Well, there have been steam villains. Stanley, Smudger, 98462/87546, etc. Ryan appears to also be shaping up to be at least an antihero.
I do agree there's an imbalance, though.

Re: Could a Steam Engine Villain Work?
You're right. They ought to
A. Have a REAL steam villain,
B. Have more antihero steamies, or
C. Cut out all the diesels and just have Diesel 10.

Re: Could a Steam Engine Villain Work?
Well, I could see someone like a new steam engine being the villain. The main eight (Thomas, Percy, James, Toby, Duck, Edward, Gordon, Henry) were manufactured, if I recall correctly, around a period of 1890 - 1930, and this one could be made in 1950 or 1960. So, he/she feels these older models need to be scrapped.

Ryan could very well be a villain. This special is shaping up to break molds.

Re: Could a Steam Engine Villain Work?
Ryan being an antagonist is certainly possible. Being that he's pretty much the polar opposite of Thomas, the two could play off well.
Also, besides Spencer being the antagonist of HOTR, James was also the antagonist of TOTB. Also there was Smudger/Stanley. (I think they count)

Re: Could a Steam Engine Villain Work?
I think a steam antagonist could work; it just has to do it correctly (which HOTR didn't and TOTB did).
As for a permanent steam engine antagonist, one could work. Perhaps one who goes too far with the Diesel rivalry; that'd be interesting.

Re: Could a Steam Engine Villain Work?
To be fair, last couple seasons James has acted like an antagonist in several episodes, even though he's not evil
Also, what do we know about Ryan? Not much, given that we only have a couple trailers of Lost Treasure to go on at the moment

As a child, when I played with my trains, I always imagined Big City Engine/Foreign Engine to be a villain. He would join forces with Diesel 10, only to be betrayed and be scrapped by his demonic claw of power.

I'm looking for a TWR Big City Engine as we speak; problem is it's gotta be in good shape for a fair price

Yes.
But, I can actually see Ryan as a villain. Not on the levels of Diesel 10, mind you, but evil in the sense of 'Wishing to get rid of Thomas so that I can be in the spotlight'. But, we shall have to wait and see.

Re: Could a Steam Engine Villain Work?
I don't know about the UK, but in the US it's illegal to record a movie in the theatre. So probably not
Although, pretty much any character can be portrayed as a villain if they are set opposite the hero, including steam engines. So do we really need a designated steam villain (aside from Spencer)?

Re: Could a Steam Engine Villain Work?
Well considering that even the Diesels have been reworked to be portrayed as more likable, I don't think we will be seeing a steam engine "villain" any time soon

I think James is the most villainous steamie at this point. Look at him! He's cruel and heartless!

Re: Could a Steam Engine Villain Work?
Interesting topic!
What would categorise a steam engine as a villain? Chasing another round the island? Plotting the demise of something or someone?
Looking at the recent 'villains' the only pattern I can see is the trickery and attempted eradication of steam. (eg: Diesel 10 - Antagonist in TATMR, wants to capture a steam engine. Diesel - Often the antagonist, getting the steam engines in trouble, playing tricks to cause delays.)
So if a steam engine/steamie was to be the villain, I would assume its evil plan would either be A) Eradicate the diesels or B) Replace the older steam engines with newer models. Both theories have been discussed!
I'd like to see a different villain, a bigger threat. What about having 'The Other Railway' make a return? Would make for some amusing story lines!

I'm actually writing about that. Check my fanfiction thread next week or so
Or C) Get revenge on another steamie.
Note: Not all movies need bad guys though.

Re: Could a Steam Engine Villain Work?
Very true, but an antagonist provides an additional dynamic. If Spencer hadn't been in HOTR, it would be ridiculously boring.
That said, there are plenty of other ways to have a villain besides Steam or Diesel. Electric, Broad Gauge, Maglev, Streetcar, Human, Railboat...
A steam villain appearing solely to be a steam villain would not work.

That's a good point; it shouldn't be forced. But King of the Railway didn't have an antagonist and that worked fine.
