Character Design Contest? Empty Character Design Contest?

Post by Guest Wed Mar 11, 2015 2:59 pm

Anyone remember those Robot Master Design Contests that Capcom used to run for the Mega Man games? Well, I was thinking "What would it be like if HiT Entertainment ever held such a contest, but for new Thomas & Friends characters?" I'm sure lots of interesting locomotive, rolling stock, road vehicle, or other machine prototypes could've been submitted and accepted/declined. Have they ever done this type of contest before?

I don't think this has ever been done, but I think it'd be a really great idea! Smile

On the other hand, I think it would've been impossible at the time, due to budget reasons. But now that the series is produced in CGI, it would've been easier to actually create the entries.

This would actually be pretty cool. I'd totally enter if they did this.

I would just use my factory error wooden Duncan as my entry, it has Peter Sam's face and says "Rocky's front car on the bottom. Or I would use a wooden MCE engine as an entry. Well it would probably have to be rendered in CGI but whatever.

You'd have to be a lot more original than that. The inspiration for this idea came from the Robot Master Design Contests or Boss Character Contests that were held by Capcom and Nintendo Power for the Mega Man series. Here's an example of a collection of entries:

Character Design Contest? 078

(Note: Some of the names of the entries were later used for actual Robot Masters, e.g. Blade Man, Freeze Man, Volt Man, and Spring Man. So, for example, I would've submitted a character called.. say, Timothy? And then the name was used for the CGI character we know today.)

Look at the custom characters page and look at Nick to find out about him, it shows how different he is compared to some other characters out there on Sodor. And another thing is there are so many characters out there on Sodor it is almost hard to make new ones with different personas, and so many names are taken it is hard to think of new names for new engines, and a lot of the character comes form the experiences of the character and those have to be made in the show so it might be hard for many to make them, but either way I would enter no matter what to try and get my mark in the show,

Here's the thing though: with the exception of Lady, all characters are based on actual engines and vehicles; it would not fit the style of the show to just go off and create original models

(Percy isn't, either.)
And, I only meant new characters based on Real Life prototypes, not "fantasy engines".

I know they are too heavy for Sodor, but I love the look of the 4-8-8-4 Big Boys, and if I were to create a character, I would base it on the Big Boy.

You know, Lady isn't the only one in the TTTE franchise with a freelance design. There's also Thumper, Ballast Spreader from The Railway Series (I'm pretty sure his design is freelance), those locomotives in the workshop in Troublesome Engines (You can't really tell what they're supposed to be based on), 13 and Sidney from the magazine stories who seem to have freelance designs.

Also, Percy's a hybrid of 3 locomotives.

I'd add a character based on an Australian locomotive since Australia has lots of interesting locomotives and they'd fit in well with British locos.

And realistically, the NWR would have built their own engines... but in the interest of tradition, one ought to use a real basis. I would go for a Mallet Triplex, or perhaps a Sharknose A and B units. They are American locos, yes, but very unique ones Or perhaps a King Class, or a Grange Class (or whatever this one's called- the entire 80 strong class disappeared without a record of being scrapped...?)

I'd enjoy seeing this. It reminds me of the 'Custom Character' on the Thomas Wooden Railway website...

Well, I couldn't find a real tamping machine that resembles the Ballast Spreader. Sidney doesn't really look that much like Stuart.

I would love to see an Aussie engine, with an Australian accent to make it interesting. If you want it to be a truly accurate Australian engine then they should be always completely unreliable and always make their passengers late. =P
